BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS

Know Who You're Dealing With

A background investigation is a systematic process used to gather, verify, and analyze information about an individual’s personal, professional, and criminal history. The goal is to assess credibility, reliability, and potential risk factors that may impact employment, litigation, contractual agreements, or personal relationships.

1. Purpose and Scope
Background investigations are conducted for a variety of reasons, including pre-employment screening, criminal defense, civil litigation, due diligence, and personal matters such as infidelity or child custody cases. The scope of the investigation is determined by the client’s objectives and applicable privacy and legal standards.

2. Information Sources
A comprehensive background investigation typically includes:

  • Criminal Records: Local, state, and federal court databases.

  • Civil Records: Lawsuits, judgments, restraining orders, and bankruptcy filings.

  • Employment and Education Verification: Confirmation of positions, degrees, and credentials.

  • Professional Licenses: Verification of status, expiration dates, and disciplinary actions.

  • Address and Residency History: Tracing prior residences for jurisdictional searches.

  • Social Media and Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT): Analysis of public online presence and digital footprint.

  • Associates and Affiliations: Identifying relationships, known associates, and possible conflicts of interest.

3. Methods and Procedures
Investigators use a combination of database research, open-source intelligence (OSINT), and field verification methods. Whenever possible, findings are corroborated through multiple sources to ensure accuracy and reliability. All investigations are conducted in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), California Investigative Consumer Reporting Agencies Act (ICRAA), and other applicable state and federal privacy laws.

4. Reporting
The results are compiled into a clear, factual, and confidential report. Each section includes source citations, relevant findings, and a professional assessment of the subject’s history as it pertains to the investigative objective. Sensitive or unverified information is carefully noted to maintain ethical and evidentiary standards.

5. Confidentiality and Compliance
All background investigations must be handled with strict confidentiality and adherence to legal guidelines. Licensed investigators are required to maintain professional ethics, avoid bias, and ensure that findings are used solely for lawful purposes.
