"Sub Rosa," is a Latin term that means "Under the Rose." "Sub" means "under," and "Rosa" means "rose" in Spanish. The Rose is a symbol of secrecy and confidentiality. The concept of secrecy dates back to ancient Greek and Roman mythology. In one story, Cupid gives a rose to Harpocrates, the god of silence, to prevent him from revealing Venus's secrets.
In workers' compensation investigations (Fraud Investigations), sub rosa refers to covert surveillance conducted to determine if an individual is as injured as they are claiming. The goal is to determine the truth. During a sub rosa investigation, the investigator will first conduct a background history, and then follow and observe the subject. The most important evidence obtained from a sub rosa investigation is photos and videos. Other evidence that can be obtained from a sub rosa investigation includes:

- Documentation of the scene of the accident
- Review of the police report
